Amgen Tour of California 2012 – Stage 4
The Amgen Tour of California Stage 4 Finish was hosted by the City of Clovis on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. Official reports noted that over 30,000 fans crowded the streets to watch Peter Sagan race across the finish line. Old Town merchants reported lower business sales than the 2009 race, however all rooms at local hotels were booked for the days surrounding the event.
B.O.O.T. worked hard to help plan the Festivities held on Fourth Street, which included food and informational booths, and also helped to coordinate the Parade that was held right before the cyclists came through town. The Stag and Thistle Pipe Band and the Glory Riders joined the San Joaquin Valley Veterans Honor Guard and the local American Indian War Association Color Guard. The Parade was rounded up by the Breakaway from Cancer walkers, representing cancer survivors, their families and providers.
The cyclists competing in the event were subjected to their longest Stage – 130.2 miles. They rode through the foothills of Mariposa and Madera Counties, including six tough climbs. The 92 degree weather certainly didn’t help them, or the fans who struggled to keep cool! When the riders came through town in a blur and rush of energy the crowd cheered them on to the finish line. The event was over quickly and the Amgen Crew of over a 1,000 people stepped in immediately to being the arduous job of tearing down and heading to Bakersfield for their next Stage.
The Amgen Tour of California finished up in Los Angeles on May 20th after eight epic days of racing. Although Peter Sagan won Stage 4 in Clovis, Robert Gesink of the Netherlands won the overall race.
This has really been an exciting time for Old Town Clovis, with local and worldwide press broadcasting our little town both near and far. Amgen is an annual event but no word has been released yet regarding their 2013 Stage schedule.
