Join the Clovis Rodeo for their Centennial Birthday Celebration – April 24-27!  The annual rodeo is a treasured Clovis tradition.  Tickets can only be purchased on-line at ClovisRodeo.com. The box office at the Clovis Rodeo grounds will open on March 3rd.

The rodeo grew naturally out the ranching lifestyle where a cowboy had to be pretty good at his job. How good became a bone of contention between competing ranchers and rodeo competition was born. 1914 was the first informal rodeo in Clovis at a community picnic organized by The Clovis Women’s Club.  The women’s club started the parade and the rodeo association followed.

In 1936 a group of ranching families put money where their hearts were and came up with $100 each to buy land just south of downtown Clovis for a permanent rodeo arena. Half of that land was donated to build a school that stands today—-Clark Intermediate School.  The rodeo lives on today due to the hard work of generations of committed families and the all-volunteer staff of the Clovis Rodeo Association who pulls it off every year, honoring our rich western heritage.

One of those families holds a strong place in our community today – the Hedrick family.  We recently met up with Brett Hedrick, of Hedrick’s Chevrolet, who is a parade coordinator along with Susan Frantzich.  Brett has been a part of the parade all of his life, riding horseback as a child in the parade with his family–all wearing matching shirts.  In fact, Brett recalled that he was Best Dressed Boy under 5 years and again when he was 11 or 12!  Brett’s dad, Bill, was on the Clovis Rodeo Board for 25 years and was Grand Marshal in 2010.  Brett’s mother has always been involved with the parade.

The 100th Clovis Rodeo takes place April 24-27, 2014 with four-days of hoof-pounding rodeo action and back-to-back concerts Thursday and Friday from some of Country Music’s hottest new stars. American Idol’s Scotty McCreery is set to perform Thursday, April 24 followed by one of Country Music’s newest chart climbers, Tyler Farr on Friday, April 25.

In Honor of the 100th Clovis Rodeo a bronze statue of Red Bull and Lane Frost has been created and placed at the entrance to the Rodeo Grounds off of Clovis Avenue. Learn more about the story here.
