“We fit right in.” That’s how Betty Frost feels about her shop, Frost Oak Creek Creations, and its placement in Old Town Clovis.
Tom and Betty Frost started travelling around California and Nevada in 1982, selling their handmade crafts at various Arts and Crafts Shows, including Big Hat Days and Clovis Fest. Betty’s crafts were sold in Country Sampler magazines and stores throughout the U.S. but they always wanted a store of their own. While driving through Old Town Clovis in June of 2011 they saw a sign – a “For Rent” sign. They were able to make arrangements with building owner, Joy Castle. After a month of cleaning, painting and repairing they opened their shop on August 16, 2011 at 425 Pollasky Avenue.
While Tom and Betty were preparing to open the shop they culled vintage display cases and their counter from neighboring antiques stores. This was their way of supporting Old Town Clovis and feeling like they were creating a look that was harmonious to the area. Betty likes to be “old-fashioned” in that way, handwriting their receipts and creating custom tags for all their products. They prefer the old fashioned way to do business too – face to face – enjoying the company of their customers as opposed to selling on-line.
Under the direction of her mother Liz, Betty began sewing at the age of 12. You can see her beautiful handiwork in the baby and toddler clothing and accessory line that she creates herself. There are blankets crocheted by Betty and Liz that would be the prize gift to any newborn. Tom adds his mark, finding local artisans and quality craft makers to showcase at the store. Their inventory includes not only baby items, but home décor, garden items, bird houses that they make themselves and custom furniture including chairs, stools and tables.
Betty remarked that Old Town Clovis “needed a homemade gift shop” and the success of their business has proven her correct. They often sell out of their handmade clothing during the events that take place, especially One Enchanted Evening and the entire Christmas season. Small details, such as the caroling and the horse drawn carriage rides, really made it special for Tom who said it was very “nostalgic”.
As they look to the future in Old Town, Tom and Betty clearly have a few tricks up their sleeve. They are planning on planting yellow flowers in support of the Amgen Tour coming in May. There are other surprises to be discovered at Frost Oak Creek Creations, details which they weren’t ready to divulge, but I assure you I will be back often to see what they have in store!
